Continent urinary diversion needs the creation of a reservoir, ureteric implantation, and establishment of a continence mechanism in the efferent segment.
Other gastrointestinal segments, such as the stomach or sigmoid colon, have been mainly considered for bladder augmentation. Detubularization and spherical reconfiguration of the bowel segment which is used for the reservoir were important steps toward better functionality.
Techniques already established for ureteric implantation in ureterosigmoidostomy were simply transferred to cutaneous CUD. The real challenge was the creation of a safe continence mechanism.
